Kano State government has committed over N1 billion to reconstruct culverts and landscape adjoining pathways in several parts of Kano metropolis, as part of effort to give the state capital a facelift befitting an emerging mega city.
The state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who made the disclosure at a meeting with members of the National Assembly from the state, at the Aminu Kano lodge in Abuja, explained that the project would cover eight metropolitan local governments in the first phase.
The project, Ganduje said, includes provision of cover for the several culverts to prevent rubbish from accumulating, thereby exposing residents to environmental and health hazards such as flooding and outbreak of diseases.
“We also intend to embark upon construction of strategic roads in each of the senatorial zones, starting with two roads per zone under our Rural Access Mobility (RAM) programme. We have already identified the roads and we shall construct them through direct labour,” the governor said.
Governor Ganduje, who took time to explain policies and programmes of his government, said many inherited projects had so far been completed, and others were on the verge of completion, while a significant number of new projects had reached appreciable level of progress.
“You can see that we have embarked upon massive construction of roads in metropolitan Kano and our rural areas, like the Karfi – Bunkure – Rano road so many others. The aim is to open up our state for enhanced movement of agricultural products to markets and to generally facilitate economic development,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to the federal legislators from Kano for supporting his administration to provide purposeful leadership to the people, hoping the spirit would remain alive.
He also urged them to remain steadfast in ensuring that the state got its rightful share from the Federal Government, and emphasised the need for them to support the Buhari administration to move the nation forward.
He promised to sustain his government’s open-door policy so that the legislators and indeed all well meaning Nigerian could participate proactively in decision-making.
Speaking on behalf of the legislators, the chief whip, House of Representatives, Alasan Ado Doguwa, expressed satisfaction with Ganduje’s leadership style, pointing out that they were honoured by the governor’s decision to carry them along in managing the state.
“We feel excited that despite the present economic situation in the country, you are able to carry out massive projects in the areas of education, health, youth empowerment and security,” he said, adding that the governors’ doggedness had resulted in the prevailing peaceful atmosphere, mainly along Falgore forest, which was hitherto a den of kidnappers and cattle rustlers.
Doguwa also praised the governor for his effort in rebranding the APC in the state and for working closely with the party leadership to bring about unity, decorum and fair play among the party members.
The meeting was attended by Senator Barau Jibrin (Kano North) and 15 other members of the National Assembly from the state.
