Twenty-four hours after the Senate threatened to suspend plenary over the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct rerun elections in Rivers State, the electoral body has formally fixed December 10 to conduct the polls.

The electoral umpire also fixed the House of Representatives election in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Councillorship election for Saturday Dec 3, 2016.

A statement by the Secretary to the Commission, Augusta Ogakwu on Thursday, says all the National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections in Rivers State would now hold on Saturday December 10, 2016.

“After months of intensive planning and wide consultations, the Independent National Electoral Commission today (Thursday) approved the conduct of the following elections:

“Lagos, House of Representative election – Saturday Dec 3, 2016.
2. Federal Capital Territory (FCT) – Councillorship election – Saturday Dec 3, 2016.

“Rivers – National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) and State House of Assembly elections – Saturday December 10, 2016”.

On Wednesday, the Senate had threatened to suspend plenary indefinitely if the electoral body failed to conduct all pending parliamentary elections in Rivers State by December 10, 2016.

This was the fallout of a motion moved by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, co-sponsored by Senate Leader Ali Ndume.
