The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday threatened to shut down six major deposit banks if they fail to recall all the sacked workers within 14 days.
The affected banks are: Fidelity Bank, Diamond Bank, First City Monument Bank, First Bank, Ecobank and Skye Bank.
The threat notice was contained in separate letters dated 13th June, 2016 titled ‘Notice on mass sack and unionisation’ signed by Chris Uyot, NLC’s Deputy General Secretary on behalf of the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba.
The letter read: “I have been directed to notify you that we have been informed by our affiliate union, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) that your bank has arbitrarily sacked a large number of workers contrary to laid down procedures and the country’s extant labour laws.
“In addition, you have also resisted unionisation of workers in your bank despite spirited efforts by the union to amicably engage you in the process.
“By this letter, we are giving your bank Fourteen (14) days  ultimatum commencing  from Thursday 16th June, 2016 to immediately recall all workers so sacked and allow unionization of workers in the  bank or face industrial action, which  may include closure of your banks and all its outlets nationwide,” Uyot said in the letter.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige is expected to meet management team of the deposit bank next month to address major issues raised by the affiliate uniins of NLC.
The Minister had penultimate week, threatened that Federal Government will withdraw the operational licences of the banks over the mass sack of workers.
