The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmoud Yakubu has declared that the Commission is working towards preventing individuals found culpable of electoral offences from contesting elective seats in the country.

Yakubu made the declaration at the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room Stakeholders Forum in Abuja.

He said the Commission has been faced with the challenges of having to conduct election re-run and bye-elections which he said are more strenuous than the general elections.

He said the general elections have less concentration of individual politicians attention compared to bye-elections and re-run elections.

He said the commission is poised at going back to the drawing board for the review of its security situations at election centres.

He decried the non-implementation of the Uwais report that recommends punitive measures against electoral offenders.

Also speaking, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami assured of the administration resolve to carry out comprehensive legal reform to address the challenges poised by outdated electoral laws.

Malami explained that some of the gaps in the electoral laws have manifested in the recent decisions of the Supreme Court on some of the election petitions.
