Determined to harness new talents and encourage career in insurance profession by students of tertiary institutions, Consolidated Hallmark Insurance (CHI) plc has elevated the status of its Annual Essay Competition with more cash prices. The first winner gets a cash price of N250, 000. 00, and direct employment with the company upon graduation.

The company’s vision towards this project is geared at harnessing new talents that would grow and become managers in the industry as current practitioners age out, amidst competitive business environment that is changing with speed on new technological advancement.

Adamu Balanti, director Research, at the National Insurance Commission who witnessed the award presentation in Lagos commended CHI for sustaining the programme while appealing to their industry to engage in similar initiative.

Balanti who represented the Commissioner for Insurance said the Commission has embarked on a number of programmes at tertiary institutions to develop and promote insurance education in Nigeria.

“For the first phase, NAICOM selected two institutions from each of the six geographical zones. The assistance is by way of providing ICT/resource centers, providing insurance and insurance related books, and provision of scholarships for Insurance department lecturers to study insurance or insurance related programs at masters or PhD levels.”

NAICOM is developing a policy road map for the development of professional Actuaries for Nigeria, stating that currently, written input and recommendations are being received from various stakeholders including practitioners, Academia, actuarial firms, international actuarial associations, Balanti stated.

Eddie Efekoha, managing director/CEO of the Company said this is part of the Company’s contribution towards education and awareness, and to encourage students in tertiary institutions that taking a career in insurance is not only rewarding, but offers opportunity for career progression

“We have also enhanced the award prices at all levels to encourage research among students of insurance in tertiary institutions across the country.

At the ward presentation ceremony held in Lagos, Florence Ogunleye of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, won the first price; Julius Olabiyi, of University of Uyo, won the second the 2nd prize, while Esekwe Ifeanyichukwu, of University of Uyo, won the third prize.

According to the Company, the monetary reward was deliberately increased to generate more interest among students, and congratulated winners for their brilliance and interest.
