Technology review: LG CURVED OLED TV EC930

The LG CURVED OLED TV has indeed ushered in a new era in TV technology. Unlike traditional, Synthetic LED’s, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) uses an organic, carbon-based compound that emits its own light when hit with an electric current. A thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane switches each specific pixel on and off and light passes through a combination of filters to reproduce amazing high-definition images.

Since OLED displays do not require a backlight, pixels that are switched off are truly black, so OLED achieves deeper black levels and a higher contrast ratio when compared to LCD and LED TV’s. A TV’s contrast ratio is a measure of the range from the brightest whites it can display to the darkest blacks. OLED uses self-lighting pixels that switch on and off individually to produce the first “infinite” contrast ratio. Until now, technology limited how far this ratio could go. With LG CURVED OLED, the deepest blacks will seem to melt away, for a greater sense of realism.

The critical response time of a TV represents how fast it refreshes the image on the screen. The LG CURVED OLED TV refresh time is less than 0.1 microseconds, drastically faster than LED TV.
