Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday, urged Nigerians to extend their support to families of fallen heroes of the Nigerian military as the nation set to mark the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The governor spoke at the official launch of the armed forces remembrance emblem at the State House, Marina. He said individuals and corporate bodies needed to support the families of those who lost their lives fighting to defend the territorial integrity of the nation as the only to encourage those still serving in the military to give their best to the nation knowing that their services are not in event.
The event was attended by heads of the three armed forces formations in Lagos, Fatai Owoseni, commissioner of police and some members of the state executive council including Oluranti Adebule, the deputy governor.
“Today, we make a clarion call to all citizens to demonstrate our appreciation of the effort of these gallant fallen heroes through donations for the welfare and upkeep of the family they left behind especially their widows and children.
“I urge the corporate organization to donate generously to this noble cause in recognition of the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.
“We must continue to acknowledge and show appreciation not only for what they have done in the past but to assure those still in active service that their efforts and sacrifices will not be in vain. This acknowledgement is particularly imperative because our nation is faced with the challenges of terrorism and insurgency in some part of the country.”
“As we speak, officers of the Nigerian Army are on the battle field battling the insurgents. They have continued to demonstrate bravery and courage in order to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the nation. They do this daily to ensure that we live in peace often,” the governor said.
Fola Akande, retired colonel and state chairman of the Nigerian Legion, in Lagos, said: “The donation will motivate serving military. He said the monies realised from the donations are distributed in cash and kind to families of fallen heroes and veterans.”
