A new open-access monograph has been published to help organisations respond to growing concerns about trust and credibility in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).

Titled Engineering of Trust™: Surviving the Authority Disruption in a Synthetic Economy, the publication was written by communications strategist and artificial intelligence practitioner Celestine Ngozichukwuka Achi and released by Cihan Media Communications.

The monograph argues that AI has changed more than the way information is created and shared. It says the technology has created what it describes as an “authority disruption”, where traditional signs of expertise and credibility are becoming less dependable as AI tools can now generate content quickly and at scale.

According to the publication, organisations can no longer rely on visibility, publishing frequency or professional presentation alone to earn public confidence. Instead, it says institutions must be able to show where information came from, how it was verified, who is responsible for it and who developed the original ideas.

“For generations, the ability to produce polished, expert-sounding work represented something meaningful because producing it required expertise, time and institutional resources,” Achi said.

“That assumption no longer holds. Artificial intelligence can now simulate many of the traditional signals of competence and authority. What becomes valuable is not simply the appearance of expertise, but the ability to account for it.”

To address this challenge, the monograph introduces what it describes as four pillars of institutional legitimacy: Transparency, Verification, Accountability and Authorship.

It explains that transparency requires organisations to disclose the sources, inputs and reasoning behind AI-supported work. Verification focuses on evidence-based and human-led validation processes. Accountability calls for clear human responsibility for decisions and published information, while authorship seeks to protect the origin, ownership and intellectual chain of custody behind ideas.

The publication also outlines practical tools designed to help institutions assess and strengthen their trust systems. These include the Trust Loop Architecture™, the TABS-D™ Methodology, the Engineering of Trust Maturity Model™ and the Trust Scorecard™.

Achi said trust should become a measurable organisational capability rather than an assumed outcome.

“Trust cannot remain a communications aspiration or an assumed outcome of visibility,” he said. “It must become a deliberately designed institutional capability. Trust must no longer be assumed. Trust must be engineered.”

The digital edition has been published under a Creative Commons licence and assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), making it openly accessible and formally citable for researchers, policymakers and institutions.

The publication is the first volume in the Engineering of Trust™ Doctrine Series and was edited by Muyiwa Akintunde, MNIPR.

It is also identified as the first completed output of the Africa AI Trust and Communications Capacity Accelerator, an initiative featured on the United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance Partnerships Hub.
