Orchestrate complex ecosystems to create prosperity, expert tells African leaders, CEOs

African business leaders in the private and public sectors have been urged to orchestrate complex ecosystems where they can act as co-creators of prosperity.

Caroline Lucas, leadership development expert and director of Special Projects at TEXEM UK, the United Kingdom based leadership development organisation made the appeal on TEXEM’s website, www.texem.co.uk Lucas said there is an urgent need for cross-sector alignment on the continent adding that this is imperative in order for leaders to win in the age of ecosystems.

“Africa’s next economic chapter will not be written by isolated corporations or siloed government ministries. In the age of ecosystems, our collective competitiveness is defined by our ability to build bridges where boundaries used to be.

“As leaders and chief executives, we stand at a defining crossroads. The traditional playbook of competing as standalone entities is no longer sufficient.

“Today, sustainable growth and continental competitiveness depend on our capacity to orchestrate complex ecosystems where the public and private sectors act as co-creators of prosperity,” the director stated.

She said that to unlock Africa’s true economic potential, leaders must recognize that foundational pillars, the very bedrock of modern commerce and societal well-being, cannot be solved by any single sector working in isolation.

Lucas asserted that achieving true resilience requires synchronized, cross-sector alignment across five critical domains.

She said the first domain is energy explaining that reliable, scalable, and sustainable power generation requires public policy frameworks that seamlessly integrate private sector innovation, capital investment, and distribution networks.

While mentioning Logistics as the next domain, Lucas said the continental trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) demands synchronized transport corridors, customs harmonization, and infrastructure investments built on public-private synergy.

She identified health as the third domain adding that a thriving workforce is a productive workforce, pointing out that building robust health security requires shared data, joint infrastructure funding, and aligned delivery models between governments and healthcare innovators.

On the next domain which is education, the expert said bridging the skills gap for the future of work necessitates curricula designed hand-in-hand by industry leaders and educational policymakers, ensuring the youth are equipped for digital and green economies.

Digital Identity is the fifth domain and Lucas explained that a secure, interoperable digital identity framework serves as the invisible architecture for financial inclusion, e-governance, and market expansion, demanding rigorous public trust alongside private-sector technological agility.

“Winning in this new era requires a shift in leadership mindset: moving away from zero sum competition toward ecosystem orchestration.

“As leaders, your mandate is to look beyond your balance sheets and legislative agendas to build collaborative frameworks that multiply our impact.

“By aligning vision, resources, and execution across sectors, we will not only future-proof our organizations, we will redefine Africa’s competitive standing on the global stage,” she said.

The statement also announced that TEXEM will be hosting a programme from 24th to 27th August 2026 in York, United Kingdom titled “Winning in the Age of Ecosystems” where African leaders and CEOs will acquire more insights on how to excel in an age of ecosystems.

Three reputable TEXEM faculty, Professor Wim Vanhaverbeke, Professor Nic Cheeseman and John Peters, are expected to deliver the programme.

Professor Wim Vanhaverbeke is a global authority on Digital Transformation, a Professor (Emeritus) of Digital Strategy and Transformation at the University of Antwerp and Antwerp Management School recognised worldwide for advancing open innovation and ecosystem management.
