ADC demands details of N7.13trn energy security spending

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded a breakdown of the N7.13 trillion recorded as “energy security” expenditure in the 2024 audited accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), questioning the beneficiaries, payments and results of the spending.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, in a statement on Monday, said the scale of the expenditure required full transparency, including the disclosure of contractors, payments made, outcomes achieved and any independent audit conducted.

The party also questioned the reported links between Tompolo, whose Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd. is a major pipeline surveillance contractor, and his reported role as a mobiliser for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

ADC said the N7.13 trillion figure represented an almost 14,800% increase from the N48 billion pipeline surveillance contract that previously triggered public outrage.

“Nigerians deserve to know what accounts for such an extraordinary escalation and, more importantly, what value the country has received in return,” the party said.

It demanded details of all energy security spending since May 2023, warning that public funds for pipeline protection must not be diverted to partisan political activities.

“The bigger the bill, the stronger the obligation to explain it,” ADC said.
