The FIFA 2026 World Cup semi-final in Atlanta pits defending champions Argentina against an England side seeking a first appearance in the final since their historic triumph in 1966.
Argentina, led by Lionel Scaloni, are bidding to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title. Much of that challenge has been driven by Lionel Messi, who continues to deliver on football’s biggest stage.

The 39-year-old captain, level with France’s Kylian Mbappe on eight goals in the Golden Boot race, has played a decisive role in Argentina’s journey to the last four, inspiring comeback victories over Cape Verde and Egypt before helping his side overcome Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Standing in their way is an England team fuelled by the goals of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. The pair have scored 12 of England’s 13 goals at the tournament, powering Thomas Tuchel’s side through the knockout rounds and reigniting hopes of ending a six-decade wait for another World Cup title.
Wednesday’s encounter will be the first competitive meeting between the two nations since the 2002 World Cup and adds another chapter to one of international football’s most iconic rivalries.
Despite the magnitude of the occasion, Tuchel insists his players are embracing the challenge.
“I don’t feel a burden,” Tuchel said. “We feel the tension and will be nervous, but that is normal.
“What I like is that I feel the players are really competitive, hungry and excited to play this match.”
With Spain already through to Sunday’s final after defeating France, the winner in Atlanta will move within one victory of lifting football’s most coveted trophy.
