Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2027 Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC) vice-presidential candidate, has called for renewed political cooperation between Northern Nigeria and the South-East, urging both regions to “forgive ourselves and unite as one family.”
Kwankwaso made the remarks in an interview with BBC Igbo published on the broadcaster’s Facebook page on Wednesday.
Kwankwaso recalled how their fathers’ Northern People’s Congress (NPC) formed a powerful and successful ruling alliance with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) during the First Republic.

He noted that in the Second Republic, Alhaji Shehu Shagari picked Dr. Alex Ekwueme from Anambra State as his Vice President to demonstrate national inclusion.
He highlighted how Northern leaders welcomed the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu back to Nigeria after the civil war, even encouraging him to run for a Senate seat.
He emphasised that no single region can succeed politically or economically without the collaborative support of other regions.
Kwankwaso clarified that a stronger tie between the North and the South-East is aimed at national stability and does not marginalise any other part of Nigeria.
Kwankwaso maintained that history will judge current political leaders harshly if they fail to uphold national peace, justice, equity, and fairness.
