Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, has formally nominated Murtala Sule Garo as his running mate for the 2027 Kano State governorship election, ending weeks of political speculation and signalling the administration’s determination to maintain continuity ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The announcement was made during a strategic meeting with federal political appointees serving under President Bola Tinubu at the Kano Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Monday by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson.
Yusuf said the decision was based on Garo’s loyalty, commitment and contributions to the administration since assuming office as deputy governor, describing him as a dependable partner who has played a significant role in implementing the government’s development agenda.
The governor said he remained satisfied with the working relationship between both leaders, adding that Garo had consistently demonstrated competence, dedication and a strong sense of responsibility in the discharge of his official duties.
“I have no regrets for choosing Garo as my deputy in the last few months, and he has proven to be the right choice so far. I want to confirm to you that I have every confidence in him,” Yusuf said.
He also passed a vote of confidence on the deputy governor, saying Garo’s contributions had strengthened the administration’s efforts to deliver meaningful development across Kano State.
Yusuf urged political leaders, government appointees and supporters to remain united as the administration consolidates on its programmes while intensifying preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The early endorsement is expected to shape political calculations within Kano, where parties have already begun positioning themselves despite the election being more than a year away. Analysts believe the announcement is intended to project stability within the government and reassure party members that there is no internal contest over the deputy governorship slot.
The move comes amid an increasingly active political environment in Kano following recent realignments involving major political actors ahead of the next election cycle. Political parties across the state have intensified consultations, membership drives and strategic meetings as they prepare for what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched governorship contests.
Since assuming office, the Yusuf administration has highlighted education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture and social welfare as priority areas. The government has repeatedly defended its performance, pointing to investments in school rehabilitation, road construction, healthcare facilities and youth empowerment initiatives as evidence of its commitment to improving living standards.
Garo has remained one of the administration’s key political figures, representing the governor at official functions and coordinating several government engagements. His public profile has grown steadily alongside the administration’s efforts to strengthen its political base across Kano’s 44 local government areas.
Observers say retaining the same ticket could help the administration present a united front while avoiding internal disputes that often arise from changes in deputy governorship candidates before elections.
The announcement also comes as political activities continue to gather momentum nationwide, with governors and party leaders increasingly making strategic decisions aimed at strengthening their structures before formal campaign activities commence.
Although the Independent National Electoral Commission has yet to release the official timetable for the 2027 general elections, political consultations and alliances have intensified across the country, particularly in states considered major electoral battlegrounds.
For Yusuf’s administration, the confirmation of Garo as running mate is expected to provide certainty within the governing political structure while allowing government officials to focus on implementing ongoing projects and consolidating support ahead of the next governorship race.
