Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have explained the departure of Michael Edwards, saying the respected football executive left after completing the key objectives set out when he returned to the club in 2024.
Edwards has stepped down as FSG’s chief executive of football after just two years of a three-year contract, ending his second spell with the club.
In a statement, FSG described his exit as a “planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities”. Group president Mike Gordon admitted the ownership was disappointed to lose Edwards but thanked him for his contribution.
“We are naturally disappointed to see Michael leave,” Gordon said, praising the work he carried out during a crucial period for both Liverpool and FSG.
Edwards returned in March 2024 to oversee Liverpool’s transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure while also helping shape FSG’s wider multi-club football strategy.
Explaining his decision to leave, Edwards said Liverpool is now well-positioned for sustained success.
“Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success.”
He added that while he was excited to help develop FSG’s broader football ambitions, the project ultimately evolved differently from what had originally been envisioned.
“When I returned, I was excited not only by the opportunity to help guide Liverpool through an important period of transition, but also by the chance to help shape FSG’s wider football ambitions.
“While that broader project ultimately evolved differently to how we had originally envisaged, I am proud of the work our team undertook in presenting ownership with a broad range of thoughtful and well-developed options for the future.”
