The Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Hon. Isa Kalanjeni, has resigned from office and subsequently dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Kalanjeni, who was elected on the APC platform in the 2024 local government elections, announced his resignation from the ruling party in a letter personally signed and addressed to the APC Ward Chairman of Kalanjeni Ward in Tangaza Local Government Area.
The resignation letter, dated May 5, 2026, stated that his decision took immediate effect.
“I wish to formally inform you of my decision to resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he wrote.
He explained that the decision was taken for personal reasons and expressed appreciation to the party leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve under the APC in Sokoto State.
In a separate letter dated July 7, 2026, addressed to the Secretary to the Sokoto State Government and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kalanjeni also resigned as the Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area.
The letter, titled “Letter of Resignation as Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area,” stated that the resignation was effective immediately.
“Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am resigning from my position as Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area, effective immediately from today,” he wrote.
The former chairman said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates and community stakeholders.
He also cited administrative challenges as a major factor behind his decision.

“Due to recent unavoidable administrative challenges, I find that I am no longer able to execute the responsibilities of this office to the high standard expected of me,” the letter stated.
Kalanjeni thanked the people of Tangaza for the opportunity to serve, expressing gratitude to the electorate, the council’s legislative arm and the local government workforce.
“I am incredibly grateful to the electorate, the council’s legislative arm and the entire staff for the privilege and opportunity to serve our people. I wish the incoming leadership and administration continued success,” he added.
Reacting to the development, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Hon. Mannir Muhammad Dan’iya, described Kalanjeni’s resignation and defection as a significant political development reflecting growing discontent within the ruling APC.
According to Dan’iya, the decision by a serving elected council chairman to relinquish office and leave the ruling party signals declining confidence in the APC administration at both the state and federal levels.
He argued that after three years in office, the APC-led governments had failed to meet public expectations in key sectors, including security, economic development, education, healthcare, youth empowerment and the general welfare of citizens.
Dan’iya also expressed concern over the performance of local government councils in the state, saying that despite increased allocations from the Federation Account, many councils had yet to deliver meaningful development to their communities.
He noted that many rural communities continue to grapple with poor infrastructure, poverty, unemployment and limited access to essential public services.
The ADC governorship candidate commended Kalanjeni’s decision, describing it as courageous, and expressed optimism that more political office holders and stakeholders dissatisfied with the current state of governance would join the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
He added that the ADC remains open to all Nigerians committed to building a more secure, prosperous and inclusive Sokoto State.
