Neymar’s father has pleaded with his son to continue playing football despite Brazil’s shock exit from the FIFA 2026 World Cup, insisting the former Seleção captain still has more to offer the game.
Brazil’s campaign came to a heartbreaking end after a 2-1 Round of 16 defeat to Norway, prompting Neymar to announce his retirement from international football.
In an emotional public message, Neymar’s father encouraged his son to remain strong, continue his club career, and build on an already remarkable legacy.
“My request to you, Ney: keep playing football, please,” Neymar’s father said.
He urged the Brazilian icon not to allow the disappointment of the World Cup to mark the end of his journey in the sport, expressing confidence that he could return stronger despite bringing his international career to a close.
Following Brazil’s elimination, Neymar confirmed that he was stepping away from international football.
“I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It’s now over,” Neymar said after the match.
The 34-year-old left the pitch in tears after Norway captain Erling Haaland struck twice in a clinical display to send the Scandinavians into the quarter-finals. Haaland’s brace also took him to the top of the tournament’s scoring charts alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé with seven goals.
Despite the painful defeat, Neymar reached another historic milestone by becoming the first Brazilian player to score 80 international goals after converting a late penalty against Norway.
He brings the curtain down on a distinguished 16-year international career, having made 130 appearances, scored 80 goals, and provided 59 assists for Brazil. Neymar retires as the Seleção’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing the legendary Pelé’s long-standing record.
