The World Cup stage is set for a historic battle as Lionel Messi’s Argentina go head-to-head with Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in a high-stakes FIFA 2026 World Cup Round of 16 encounter on Tuesday.

The defending world champions meet the African powerhouses at the Atlanta Stadium for the right to advance to the quarterfinals and face either Switzerland or Colombia. Beyond the team’s stakes, the match is a crucial battleground for Messi, who looks to reclaim the outright lead in a fiercely contested Golden Boot race.

Messi targets Golden Boot lead

Messi enters the contest looking to reclaim the outright lead in the Golden Boot race after scoring seven goals at the tournament, level with France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland. Mbappe currently leads the standings on assists.

Argentina survived a major scare in the Round of 32, edging World Cup debutants Cape Verde in extra time thanks to an own goal by Diney Borges.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni expects another difficult challenge against an Egypt side that remains unbeaten in the tournament.

“We are on the alert just like we were before the match against Cape Verde,” Scaloni said.

“Egypt is a very good team. They have important players and a coach who has been working with them for a while. They play good football and always make it difficult for their rivals.

“Salah is a great player. It will be a pleasure to face him. Our team knows how to deal with great players, and we always work hard for it.”

Scaloni also confirmed that 39-year-old Messi is fit to start despite playing the full 120 minutes in Argentina’s last match.

Beyond the Golden Boot race, Messi is also chasing another World Cup milestone, holding a one-goal advantage over Mbappe in the race to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 20 goals.

Salah eyes historic Egypt breakthrough

Egypt, meanwhile, reached the Round of 16 after eliminating Australia in a penalty shootout and are aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

Salah has scored once in four matches at the tournament and will be the Pharaohs’ biggest attacking threat against the reigning champions.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan insisted his side would not be intimidated by Argentina’s reputation.

“This is a World Cup, a great opportunity to prove ourselves and that we belong here,” Hassan said.
