Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Ghana, ending the Black Stars’ campaign and reaching the knockout stage for the third time in their last three World Cup appearances.
Jhon Arias’ first-half goal proved decisive at Arrowhead Stadium as the South Americans dominated proceedings and advanced to a last-16 clash with Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday.

Early goal proves enough
Ghana threatened inside the opening minute when Thomas Partey fired narrowly wide, but that proved to be their only real moment of promise in an otherwise disappointing display.
Both teams were forced into early substitutions after injuries. Colombia lost Jhon Córdoba to an apparent groin problem before Luis Suárez replaced him, while Ghana introduced Alidu Seidu after Marvin Senaya was forced off.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Suárez showed determination down the right flank before delivering a precise cross for the unmarked Arias, who calmly guided the ball into the net.
Colombia dominate as Ghana struggle
The goal handed Ghana an uphill task, and Colombia took complete control of the contest with slick passing and fluid attacking football.
Luis Díaz came close to doubling the lead in the 39th minute but dragged his effort wide before Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi produced an excellent save to deny Johan Mojica’s powerful header in first-half stoppage time.
The statistics reflected Colombia’s dominance. Ghana failed to register a single shot on target in the opening half and completed fewer than half the passes managed by their opponents.
Black Stars fail to mount comeback
Colombia continued to create chances after the break but struggled to convert their superiority into goals.
Díaz had a goal ruled out for offside before seeing another effort saved by Ati Zigi, while Juan Quintero flashed a late strike narrowly wide.
Despite creating numerous opportunities, Arias’ early finish proved enough against a Ghana side that failed to produce a single shot on target throughout the match.
Díaz targets improvement
Named Player of the Match, Díaz praised Colombia’s steady progress but admitted the team must become more clinical in front of goal.
“We’re just missing that little detail of finishing a bit better and staying composed. I think we played a very solid game.”
The Bayern Munich winger also acknowledged his own missed opportunities.
“I had chances to convert. That confidence I want to have isn’t quite at 100 percent yet.
“I’m trying to improve game by game. I felt much better in today’s match than in the previous one, without a doubt.”
Colombia now turn their attention to a Round of 16 showdown with Switzerland, while Ghana’s World Cup journey ends after another disappointing exit, with the Black Stars failing to score or register a shot on target in their decisive knockout encounter.
