Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has sensationally announced he is stepping away from international football, declaring he will not represent the Teranga Lions again until the current coaching staff is replaced.

The Villarreal midfielder made the bombshell announcement just hours after Senegal’s heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32 of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, a collapse that saw the West Africans squander a two-goal lead in the closing minutes of normal time.

The decision piles fresh pressure on head coach Pape Thiaw, whose future is now expected to come under intense scrutiny following another major tournament disappointment.

World Cup heartbreak triggers shock announcement

Senegal looked destined for a historic World Cup quarter-final push after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr gave them a deserved 2-0 advantage. However, late strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans forced extra time before Belgium snatched victory through Tielemans’ controversial 125th-minute penalty.

Gueye, who started the match before being substituted for Lamine Camara in the 66th minute, broke his silence in a strongly worded message posted on his Instagram Story.

“I will come back to say a few words about the elimination… but I am announcing today that as long as this coaching staff is in place, I will be taking a break from the national team.”

Growing pressure on Thiaw

The 27-year-old has earned 45 caps for Senegal and was one of the team’s standout performers during the tournament, scoring twice in the emphatic 5-0 group-stage victory over Iraq.

His public stance represents one of the most significant player revolts against the national team’s technical leadership in recent years and raises fresh questions about the stability of Senegal’s football project ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Thiaw, who took charge in December 2024, has endured a turbulent spell. His tenure remains overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, when Senegal briefly walked off the pitch after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

Although Senegal returned to complete the match and Gueye scored the extra-time winner after Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later overturned the result. It awarded the title to Morocco after ruling against Senegal’s actions.

Uncertain future for Senegal

It remains unclear whether Gueye’s decision stems solely from the World Cup exit or reflects deeper frustrations with Thiaw and his technical team. Neither the Senegalese Football Federation nor the coaching staff has responded publicly to the midfielder’s announcement.

With Senegal entering a new international cycle, Gueye’s decision threatens to spark a wider debate over the national team’s direction and the future of Thiaw’s leadership.
