African teams continue to make their mark at the FIFA 2026 World Cup, with six countries already securing places in the Round of 32 following the conclusion of the latest round of group-stage fixtures.
Africa has 10 representatives at the expanded tournament, and Ghana and Cape Verde became the latest teams to book their places in the knockout stage, joining Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Ivory Coast.
The six qualified African countries are:
Morocco
Egypt
South Africa
Ivory Coast
Ghana
Cape Verde
Tunisia have become the first African country to be eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after failing to progress from the group stage.
The fate of the remaining three African representatives—Senegal, Algeria and DR Congo—remains uncertain.
All three are hoping their points totals and goal differences will be enough to secure qualification as some of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Senegal boosted their chances with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq, finishing third in Group I and significantly improving their goal difference.
Algeria also remain in contention and will face Austria in a decisive Group J showdown, where victory would guarantee their place in the Round of 32.
DR Congo, meanwhile, must await the outcome of the remaining group-stage fixtures to discover whether they have done enough to advance.
With six African teams already through and three others still in the hunt, the continent is on course for one of its strongest-ever performances at a FIFA World Cup.
