As the African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re) marks its Golden Jubilee, former Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, Ken Aghoghovbia, has paid tribute to the institution’s founders and generations of employees whose dedication transformed the corporation into one of Africa’s most respected financial institutions.
Reflecting on the reinsurer’s 50-year journey, Aghoghovbia described the milestone as a celebration of vision, sacrifice, discipline and resilience, noting that Africa Re’s success story stands as a testament to what can be achieved when institutions remain committed to their founding ideals.
“As the African Reinsurance Corporation celebrates its Golden Jubilee, I find myself reflecting on the vision of the Corporation’s founding fathers and the sacrifice, discipline, resilience and unwavering commitment of generations that dared to build an institution which today is marvellous in our sight,” he said.
Having spent a significant part of his professional career at Africa Re, Aghoghovbia said the anniversary holds special significance for him, offering an opportunity to reflect on the corporation’s evolution and enduring strengths.
He noted that while the insurance and reinsurance landscape has undergone substantial transformation over the decades, Africa Re has remained anchored on values that have sustained its growth and reputation across the continent.
“Over the years, I have witnessed several changes but thankfully, what remains constant includes the Corporation’s integrity, professionalism and courage to adapt,” he stated.
According to him, the corporation’s 50th anniversary is not merely a celebration of longevity but recognition of the trust it has earned, the relationships it has built and the value it has consistently delivered to clients and stakeholders across Africa and beyond.
He credited the corporation’s success to the dedication of its workforce, the strategic decisions of its leadership and the strong institutional culture that enabled teams to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.
“The 50th Anniversary represents more than longevity. It represents trust earned, relationships built, and value delivered to clients together with other stakeholders,” Aghoghovbia said.
He added that the milestone also reflects “the countless sacrifices of staff who went beyond the call of duty, the foresight of Executive Management who made tough but necessary decisions, and the undying family spirit that propelled teams to turn challenges into stepping stones.”
Looking ahead, Aghoghovbia challenged the younger generation of Africa Re professionals to preserve the values that have shaped the corporation’s success while embracing innovation and change.
He described them as custodians of a highly respected brand, urging them to uphold the principles of integrity, professionalism, innovation and stakeholder respect that have defined the organisation for five decades.
At the same time, he encouraged them to think boldly and adapt to the rapidly changing insurance environment.
“Do not be afraid to reimagine, to question constructively, and to lead courageously. The insurance industry will continue to evolve rapidly, but Africa Re is confident in your agility, technological fluency and fresh perspectives for prompt responses to future challenges,” he said.
Aghoghovbia further emphasised the importance of protecting the corporation’s hard-earned reputation, describing it as one of Africa Re’s most valuable assets.
“Please protect Africa Re’s reputation as though it were your own because, in many ways it is. And strive to leave the corporation stronger than you met it,” he advised.
As Africa Re enters its next chapter, his remarks underscore the institution’s enduring role in strengthening Africa’s insurance and reinsurance industry, while highlighting the responsibility of future generations to build on a legacy forged through five decades of excellence, innovation and service to the continent.
He concluded by congratulating the board, management, staff, retirees and stakeholders whose contributions have shaped the corporation’s remarkable journey and expressed optimism that the next fifty years will deliver even greater achievements for Africa’s leading reinsurer.
