Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has alleged corruption within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), claiming certain officials were responsible for her omission from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The 28-year-old made the allegations in a social media post, expressing disappointment at her reported exclusion from the tournament, which Morocco will host from July 25 to August 16, 2026.
Defending champions Nigeria will be aiming to win a record-extending 11th WAFCON title when the competition kicks off next month.
Plumptre Alleges Improper Demands
Plumptre, who plays for Al-Ittihad Women and has become a key figure in the Super Falcons defence, suggested her exclusion was linked to demands allegedly made by some officials.
“I have just been excluded from the squad for the upcoming WAFCON,” Plumptre wrote on her social media account.
“By certain corrupt officials who demanded something from me that I could not and would never offer.
“If my talent, hard work, dedication and commitment to representing my country are not enough to earn my place in the team, then perhaps it is time for me to step back.”
“I Can Never Go Against My Values”
The British-born Nigerian international, who chose to represent Nigeria despite being eligible for England, said the development had left her deeply hurt.
“This hurts deeply because wearing the national colours has always been an honour I never took for granted.
“But I can never go against my values just to earn a call-up. Never.”
Plumptre has been one of the Super Falcons’ most influential players in recent years, earning widespread praise for her performances at major international tournaments.
NFF Yet to Release Official Squad
The NFF is yet to officially release the Super Falcons squad for the 2026 WAFCON, but Plumptre’s comments have already sparked debate among fans and stakeholders over transparency, accountability and governance in Nigerian football.
The allegations are likely to place additional scrutiny on the federation as preparations continue for Africa’s biggest women’s football competition.
WAFCON Set for July Kick-Off in Morocco
The 2026 WAFCON was originally scheduled to begin on March 17 before the Confederation of African Football postponed the tournament due to logistical, commercial and other unforeseen circumstances.
With the competition now set to begin in July, attention is expected to intensify on the NFF as calls grow for clarification regarding Plumptre’s claims and her apparent absence from the squad list.
