Iran came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening match of the FIFA 2026 World Cup on Monday, ending months of uncertainty with a hard-fought point in Los Angeles.
The Iranian team’s participation at the tournament had been in doubt following months of military tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which created significant logistical and political challenges ahead of the competition.

Iran had faced concerns over their ability to compete after the United States and Israel launched a bombing campaign in February. The team was forced to relocate its training camp from the United States to Mexico because of visa complications, while 11 non-playing officials were denied entry into the US.
New Zealand stun Iran with early lead
Once attention turned to football, Iran found themselves under pressure against New Zealand, the lowest-ranked team at the tournament.
Veteran striker Chris Wood played a key role in New Zealand’s opening goal in the seventh minute. After controlling a long pass, the Nottingham Forest forward turned and released Elijah Just, who combined neatly with Wood and Sarpreet Singh before smashing a volley into the net.
Iran nearly levelled midway through the first half when star striker Mehdi Taremi struck the post with a powerful long-range effort.
Team Melli respond amid charged atmosphere
The match unfolded in a politically charged atmosphere both inside and outside the stadium.
Hundreds of demonstrators protesting against Iran’s ruling regime gathered outside the venue, arguing that the national team did not represent the Iranian people.
Inside the stadium, many supporters displayed anti-government symbols despite FIFA’s rules prohibiting political messaging. Iran’s national anthem was met with a mixture of boos and cheers.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei had insisted before the match that his players would not “pay attention to any of the hype,” and his team eventually showed resilience on the pitch.
Rezaeian and Mohebi rescue a point
Despite twice trailing through goals from Elijah Just, Iran responded through Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebi to earn a valuable draw.
Backed by a vocally pro-Iran crowd that largely drowned out the planned protests, Team Melli avoided an embarrassing defeat and opened their World Cup campaign with a point.
Having overcome visa delays, travel disruptions and political controversy before arriving at the tournament, Iran will hope the draw serves as a platform for a stronger showing in their remaining Group G fixtures.
