The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, revealing that the former military officer succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension despite efforts to secure his release.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, described the development as a tragic loss to Katsina State and the nation, noting that sustained interventions by the state government and security agencies failed to save the retired General.

According to the statement, the late military officer died while in captivity after battling diabetes and hypertension.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement said.
It added that extensive efforts involving the state administration and security agencies were undertaken to ensure his safe release but unfortunately ended in tragedy.
The government described the deceased as a distinguished officer whose death represents a monumental loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, considering his years of dedicated service to the country.

Dikko Umaru Radda, Governor of Katsina State, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and Nigerians, describing the incident as a dark reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting the country.
The governor said the unfortunate development underscores the urgent need for intensified collaboration against criminal elements threatening peace and security across communities.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure those responsible for criminal acts are brought to justice.
Governor Radda also assured residents that the administration remains resolute in its determination to protect lives and property and restore lasting peace across the state.
The government offered prayers for the repose of the late General’s soul and for strength for his family to bear the irreparable loss.
