Christopher Musa, Minister of Defence, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy with modern capabilities, advanced technologies and operational support needed to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain and drive the growth of the nation’s blue economy.

The minister pledged the grand finale of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy during the Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night held in Lagos.

The minister said FG remained determined to provide the resources and enabling environment required to build a technologically advanced, interconnected and globally respected naval force capable of effectively protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests and regional waters.

He stressed that emerging maritime and security threats demand a modern navy equipped with cutting-edge surveillance systems, intelligence-gathering capabilities, cyber defence tools, unmanned technologies and data-driven operational platforms.

According to him, the future effectiveness of the Nigerian Navy will depend largely on its ability to embrace innovation and strengthen cooperation with regional and international partners.

“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners.

“A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness and operational effectiveness and contribute significantly to collective security within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” he said.

The minister noted that the government would continue to strengthen the Navy’s operational capacity to enable it to protect maritime assets, defend national interests and support national development objectives.

He commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings and civilian personnel of the service for what he described as seven decades of exceptional professionalism, resilience and dedication to duty.

The minister also acknowledged the support of Nigeria’s international partners, expressing appreciation for their continued cooperation in promoting maritime security and stability within the region.

Highlighting the Navy’s role in national development, he said its operations had significantly contributed to protecting Nigeria’s blue economy by securing strategic sea lanes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and other critical maritime assets.

He observed that the service has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes that undermine economic growth and national prosperity.

According to him, the Navy’s contributions extend beyond maritime security, noting that its active participation in internal security operations alongside other armed forces and security agencies has helped maintain peace and stability across the country.

“The Nigerian Navy’s contributions extend beyond maritime security. Through its active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, it has played a vital role in maintaining peace, stability, and the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development,” he stated.

The minister said the Navy’s efforts have enhanced Nigeria’s sovereignty, boosted investor confidence, facilitated trade and commerce, and positioned the country to maximise opportunities within the maritime sector.

He further congratulated officers and ratings who received awards and special recognitions during the anniversary event, including personnel honoured posthumously for acts of courage, dedication and sacrifice.

The minister praised the award recipients for upholding the highest traditions of naval service and serving as role models for future generations of personnel.

“Through your dedication, professionalism, courage, and selfless service, you have upheld the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspired future generations of naval personnel,” he said.

The event also featured the traditional Ceremonial Sunset, a longstanding naval custom observed by maritime forces around the world.
