As the world marks World Environment Day 2026, global attention is turning to one of the defining challenges of our time: climate change. This year’s observance, hosted by Azerbaijan under the theme of Climate Action, serves as a powerful reminder that the future of our planet depends on the choices governments, businesses and individuals make today. The campaign calls for accelerated action to reduce emissions, transform energy systems and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

For BAT Nigeria, climate action is not a future aspiration; it is an ongoing business imperative embedded within its long-term strategy and operations. As one of Nigeria’s leading manufacturers and exporters, the company continues to demonstrate that environmental responsibility and industrial competitiveness are not mutually exclusive. Rather, they are increasingly interconnected drivers of sustainable growth.

At the heart of BAT Nigeria’s environmental journey is a deliberate transformation of how its operations consume and manage energy.

In a landmark achievement, the company has successfully transitioned 100 per cent of its operations from diesel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), eliminating diesel use entirely across its manufacturing processes. This significant shift has substantially reduced the carbon intensity of operations while enhancing energy efficiency and operational resilience.

Complementing this transition is the installation of a 1.4-megawatt solar energy system at its Ibadan factory, one of the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the region. Together, these investments form a critical pillar of BAT Nigeria’s ambition.

The company’s environmental stewardship extends beyond energy transition. BAT Nigeria continues to set industry-leading benchmarks in waste management and circularity. Since 2024, the business has achieved an impressive 98.64 per cent waste recycling rate, while its Ibadan factory has maintained a 100 per cent zero-waste-to-landfill status since 2021, reflecting a strong commitment to resource efficiency and responsible waste management.

Water stewardship represents another area where BAT Nigeria has delivered measurable impact. BATN’s factory has maintained full certification under the globally recognised Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard since 2022. Through sustained investments in water efficiency and recycling technologies, BAT Nigeria has reduced freshwater withdrawal by approximately 42 per cent, significantly surpassing its global target of 35 per cent ahead of the 2030 deadline.

These achievements are underpinned by a broader commitment to operational excellence and digital transformation. BAT Nigeria has deployed advanced manufacturing technologies, including a Global Manufacturing System and an integrated Enterprise Data Platform, enabling real-time monitoring and optimisation of resource use. The introduction of a Utility Monitoring System and Smart Boiler technology is further enhancing energy efficiency while reducing emissions and environmental impact.

The company’s approach reflects a growing understanding that technology and sustainability must work together to deliver meaningful climate outcomes. By leveraging data-driven insights, BAT Nigeria is improving operational performance while reducing its environmental footprint, demonstrating how digital innovation can serve as a powerful enabler of sustainable development.

Speaking on the significance of World Environment Day and BAT Nigeria’s sustainability journey, Ishtaq Hasnain, Operations Director BAT Nigeria, said: “Climate action requires more than commitments; it requires measurable action and sustained investment.

At BAT Nigeria, we are transforming the way we operate by embedding sustainability into every aspect of our business. From investing in solar energy to advancing circularity and water stewardship, we are demonstrating that industrial growth and environmental responsibility can go together. As we work towards a future powered by cleaner energy and smarter technologies, we remain committed to contributing positively to Nigeria’s environmental and economic development.”

As the world accelerates its response to climate change, BAT Nigeria remains committed to advancing its purpose of building A Better Tomorrow™ while helping create a future where economic growth, environmental stewardship and sustainable development thrive together.
