….says ADC govt will prioritise security, economy, healthcare, education, others
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi and economist, Mohammed Hayat-Deen to join forces with him to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Atiku made the appeal on Wednesday night in Abuja while accepting the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after emerging winner of the party’s primary election at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
He defeated Amaechi and Hayat-Deen, polling 1,846,370 votes out of 2,527,977 total votes cast. Amaechi secured 504,117 votes, while Hayat-Deen garnered 177,120 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Atiku said the opposition must unite to “rescue Nigeria” from economic hardship, insecurity, political intolerance and what he described as the APC’s attempt to create a one-party state.
“I congratulate my fellow contestants for this ticket to represent our great party in the elections scheduled for early next year. I know that you are driven by your patriotism and commitment to a better Nigeria and improved life for our people.
“I know that, like me, you are deeply concerned about the rapid descent of our country into economic disaster, catastrophic insecurity, extreme nepotism, political intolerance and the drive towards a one-party state by the current government and its party. I thank you for your healthy participation in this democratic process.
“I must state at this juncture that this is not the time to celebrate. No one was defeated because we are one party and we all need to recognise the fierce urgency of the moment. Therefore, we have to unite, as we pledged before this process, to work to pull our country and our people out of the destructive grip of a corrupt, incompetent and polarising APC government,” he said.
“There are no winners and no losers,” he added, calling on Amaechi and Hayat-Deen to work with him to save democracy in the country.
Atiku said an ADC government under his leadership would prioritise security, education, healthcare, economic recovery and equitable power-sharing among the country’s constituent units.
