Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the United Nations projection that nearly 35 million Nigerians could face acute hunger between June and August 2026 as a damning verdict on the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement on Monday issued in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said Nigeria had moved from economic hardship to a full-blown humanitarian crisis under the current administration.

“This is a human tragedy of terrifying proportions,” he said

Atiku blamed the crisis on what he described as policy failures, including the removal of fuel subsidy without adequate social protection measures and the handling of foreign exchange reforms.

According to Atiku, rising inflation, worsening insecurity and the collapse of purchasing power have pushed millions into hardship, while farmers across several states can no longer safely access their farmlands.

He urged the federal government to declare a food security emergency and provide urgent support for farmers and vulnerable households nationwide.
