No fewer than four persons have been confirmed dead after a Volkswagen Golf wagon plunged into Tomas Dam, located in the Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State, following a suspected tyre burst.

The accident occurred along the Kano-Roni road while the vehicle was travelling from Kano to Roni in neighbouring Jigawa State.

Emergency teams deploy swift rescue operations at crash site
Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, issued an official statement disclosing that the Danbatta Fire Service Division received a distress call regarding the incident from a local resident identified as Suleman.

The agency confirmed that 10 passengers were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Firefighters swiftly mobilised to the location, executing an emergency rescue operation that successfully pulled all the occupants out of the reservoir.

Four of the victims were rescued in an unconscious state and were subsequently confirmed dead upon arrival at the medical facility.

Officials identified two of the deceased as Shamsiya Miko, 35, and Fatima Danlami, 40. The identities of the remaining two victims could not be immediately verified at the time of filing this report.

“All the victims were taken to Danbatta General Hospital for treatment and other necessary procedures,” the statement noted.

Regulatory authorities demand urgent infrastructure intervention
Preliminary findings by emergency services indicate that a tyre puncture triggered the fatal plunge, causing the driver to lose total control of the vehicle before it veered off the road layout and into the deep water channel.

Sani Anas, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when navigating highways and transit routes situated near active waterways.

The agency head issued an urgent appeal to the relevant infrastructure authorities to construct reinforced safety barriers around Tomas Dam to prevent similar transit tragedies in the future.

The accident coincides with rising regional concerns regarding deteriorating road safety standards across northern Nigeria. The tragedy follows a separate fatal multi-vehicle collision in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, where two individuals died in a crash involving an articulated haulage trailer and a Toyota sedan.
