At least 29 people have been killed after suspected terrorists attacked the Guyaku community in Gombi LGA of Adamawa State late on Sunday, with gunmen carrying out sporadic shootings for several hours, killing residents and destroying property, according to Reuters.

Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri confirmed the death toll during a visit to the community on Monday. He described the attack as “tragic and unacceptable” and condoled with bereaved families. “My heart breaks for the people of Guyaku in Gombi LGA. Today, I stood on the ground where our brothers and sisters were cruelly taken from us,” Fintiri wrote on X. “To the attackers: justice is coming.”

The governor said the state government was intensifying security operations to restore peace in the area. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The assault is the latest in a long pattern of violence in Adamawa State, which has faced frequent attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups for over a decade. In February, more than 24 people were killed when gunmen attacked Kirchinga village in Madagali LGA, razing homes, shops, and places of worship. Amnesty International condemned those killings and urged authorities to do more to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable.
