…Taunts Atiku over ‘nap’ at opposition summit
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply criticised Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over comments he made at a weekend summit held in Ibadan by the opposition parties’ members, accusing him of invoking the Country’s violent past to stoke tension.
In a statement on Sunday, Felix Morka, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, alleged that Governor Makinde referenced the infamous “Operation Wetie” era to suggest a looming one-party State, describing the remarks as “reckless” and a threat to national peace and security.
The summit, held on Saturday, brought together key opposition figures, who resolved to work towards presenting a single Presidential candidate for the 2027 General elections.
The APC said it was troubling that a sitting governor and chief security officer of a State would allude to one of Nigeria’s darkest periods of political violence in what it interpreted as an attempt to incite unrest.
“Makinde’s rhetoric goes beyond opposition politics. It risks fuelling anarchy, widespread lawlessness and undermining national stability,” the party stated. The APC urged security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act to safeguard lives and property.
Also, Ajibola Bashiru, National Secretary of the APC, mocked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over a photo, showing him apparently asleep during the opposition summit in Ibadan.
Reacting, Bashiru shared the image on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, captioning it, “And the opposition leader slept at the all-important opposition summit.”
He also used the same post to counter claims that the APC was unsettled by the opposition’s move to unite behind a single candidate ahead of the next Presidential election.
