The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unveiled a USD 604,576 emergency assistance project to support victims of the catastrophic 2025 floods and landslides in the Republic of Guinea.
A delegation from the ECOWAS Commission, acting on behalf of Omar  Touré,  President of the Commission and led by Fatou Sow Sarr, Commissioner for Social Affairs,  arrived in Conakry on Monday for a five-day field mission running from April 6 to 10, 2026.
According to a statement by the Commission, the mission is tasked with assessing the impact of ECOWAS’s 2024 flood response and implementing new measures to address ongoing humanitarian needs.
The launch ceremony featured the symbolic presentation of a cheque totaling USD 604,576 to the Guinean Government.
The funds were received by Mohammed C.K. Camara, Secretary General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization.
Speaking at the event, Sarr emphasized that the project reflects ECOWAS’s commitment to regional solidarity and coordinated disaster response.
“This initiative underlines our collective responsibility to support Member States in times of crisis,” she said, highlighting the increasing frequency of natural disasters in West Africa.
According to her, the emergency assistance will provide immediate relief to affected communities, including temporary shelter, food supplies, medical support, and rehabilitation of essential infrastructure.
She noted that the intervention is part of a broader ECOWAS strategy to strengthen resilience and improve preparedness against future climate-related disasters in the region.
Camara, representing the Guinean Government, expressed gratitude to ECOWAS for the timely support, stressing that the aid will significantly alleviate the hardships faced by flood and landslide victims.
The five-day mission will also involve on-site visits to the most affected areas, enabling ECOWAS officials to evaluate ongoing recovery efforts and coordinate with local authorities for effective aid delivery.
