Road to the Showdown
The bout was originally scheduled for January 24 but was postponed after Itauma withdrew due to injury. Now fully fit, the 21-year-old returns aiming to take another decisive step toward a future world title shot.
Widely regarded as one of boxing’s brightest young talents, Itauma is entering the biggest fight of his professional career. Victory over the experienced Franklin would further accelerate his rise in the heavyweight division and strengthen his credentials as a serious contender.
A Journey of Setbacks and Resolve
Itauma’s journey, however, has not been without setbacks. Despite a decorated amateur career that saw him win multiple national and European titles, he once considered walking away from boxing entirely.
Frustrated by a lack of financial reward and concerned about his health after suffering concussions, he stepped away from the sport for several months during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on that period, Itauma revealed he questioned his future in boxing despite his success in the amateur ranks.
“There was a point where I was a two-time national champion and two-time European champion, but I hadn’t been paid a penny,” he said on Jamie Laing’s podcast. “I had concussions and felt like I was damaging my body. I asked myself, ‘What am I doing this for?’”
Back on Track
After taking time away, Itauma returned to training with renewed focus. His comeback proved decisive, as he went on to win the Youth European Championships and reignite interest in his potential.
Now back on track and unbeaten in the professional ranks, Itauma sees Saturday’s clash with Franklin as a defining moment.
A convincing performance could move him significantly closer to the pinnacle of the heavyweight division and confirm his status as one of boxing’s most promising prospects.
