Kenny Ezenwani Odogwu, after an extraordinary 29 years on the Board of Royal Exchange Plc, has taken a bow, leaving behind a legacy defined by business excellence, strategic foresight, and boardroom mastery.
A consummate technocrat, his tenure has been marked by disciplined governance, visionary leadership, and a steadfast commitment to institutional growth. His influence has not only strengthened Royal Exchange Plc, but has also resonated across Nigeria’s financial services sector, contributing meaningfully to the broader economy.
While friends, business associates and key stakeholders in the economy gathered to mark his retirement, it was a celebration of career of impact, a standard of excellence, and a legacy that will endure.
Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, who attended the retirement ceremony at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, over the weekend, said, “Ken is not retiring; he is only changing occupation, because he still has a lot to contribute to Nigeria’s economy and development.”
According to Obasanjo, Kenneth Ezenwani Odogwu took over from his father, who was one of the most successful businessmen in West Africa at the time. He noted that Odogwu still possesses a wealth of knowledge acquired over the years, which should be channelled into grooming the younger generation of Nigerians.
Other dignitaries at the event included Ibe Kachukwu, former minister of Petroleum; Ernest Ndukwu, former executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Ikeme Osakwe, chairman of Royal Exchange Plc; and Idu Okeahialam, group managing director/CEO, as well as chairmen and CEOs of all Royal Exchange subsidiaries.
Speaking at the event, Osakwe said leadership is not measured by years but by impact, and that Kenneth Ezenwani Odogwu’s legacy is reflected in the strength, stability, and standards he leaves behind. He added, “In moments that demanded resolve, he gave direction, and in times of uncertainty, he brought calm, leading not by authority but by stewardship and principle.”
The Chairman further noted that Odogwu departs not as one who has merely completed a role, but as one whose influence will continue to shape decisions, values, and the future of the organisation.
Idu Okeahialam, the GMD, highlighted that working closely with Odogwu provided a firsthand view of a leader deeply committed to the long-term solvency and ethical integrity of the underwriting firm. He credited the former Chairman with strengthening the foundation upon which Royal Exchange continues to build its market-leading products and digital transformation initiatives.
“Sir, your contributions to this institution are enduring. You have led with integrity, served with distinction, and departed leaving the organisation stronger than you met it,” she added.
Born on May 11, 1963, Kenny odogwu’s journey reflects a global perspective and purposeful leadership, from his education in the United Kingdom and the United States to earning an Executive MBA from New York University. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1990, he began his career at Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe, and Belgore before expanding into finance and leading across multiple sectors with vision and excellence.
