Six prominent Nigerians would, on April 18, 2026, be bestowed with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards by Independent Newspapers Limited in recognition of their years of efforts towards the economic and political development of the country.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards seek to honour individuals for exceptional, long-term contributions and lasting impact within their field or society in the course of their career.

Consequently, Independent Newspapers Limited has selected six prominent Nigerians whose lasting impact on Nigerians over the course of their careers and even now cannot be overemphasised.

Pa Samuel Adedoyin, founder of Doyin Group of Companies, for instance, is one of the recipients of the prestigious award. Through Doyin Group of Companies, whose business interest spans manufacturing, real estate, hospitality Industry, the energy sector, farming, company equity participation, banking, and more, Pa Adedoyin has been able to provide means of livelihood to hundreds of thousands of Nigerians.

Apart from providing employment as well as goods and services to Nigerians, he has used his fortunes to better the lots of the citizens through philanthropy.

In his home state of Kwara, many have benefited from his scholarships and school development projects; some of whom have grown to become notable figures in their fields.

He recently donated a modern ICT facility to Lagos State University (LASU), further affirming his national reach.

His latest project, the Prince Samuel Adedoyin College of Nursing Sciences in Agbamu, Kwara State, is another milestone. Sitting on 22 acres of land beside a General Hospital he earlier donated, the institution had its foundation laid on September 25, 2025.

With a promise of world-class facilities and a N1 billion investment, the college is expected to be completed within 12 months, among so many other landmark acts of generosity.

Theophilus Y, Danjuma, a retired general and ex-Defence minister, is another awardee. Although he is mostly known as a retired military officer, TY Danjuma has been able to use and is still using his position and Foundation to the benefit of Nigerians.

After holding several vital military posts, including being a Sector Commander of the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Nsukka during the Civil War where he helped to ensure Nigeria’s unity as a model front-line officer reputed for professionalism and effectiveness, he was, in 1975, appointed Chief of Army Staff.

Within the four years he served as the army chief, Danjuma brought his professionalism to bear on his job, especially on the challenges of post-civil war demobilisation.

Perhaps, his greatest achievement then as army chief was berthing the now popular Army Staff Command Secondary Schools, a move that protected the children of officers just then coming back from post war trauma.

His tenure also brought about Army Command & Staff College, which ensured that officers of the rank of Major attended compressed two courses to enhance their academic and professional competencies.

As a successful businessman, TY Danjuma has been able to deepen humanitarian works, impacting communities. At a time, the Foundation endowed $100 million to cater for the rural population in terms of education, primary healthcare, income-generation as well as eradication of neglected tropical diseases like leprosy, river blindness, elephantiasis and the likes.

To date, the Foundation has disbursed over US$41 million in grants to support 340 projects impacting over 10 million lives across Nigeria. Among others, he also made a personal donation of US$10 million to the Victims Support Fund, which he chairs.

Donald Etiebet, another recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, is Nigeria’s former minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources.

Under him as the then minister, major iconic landmarks in the Nigerian petroleum industry were berthed.

It was while he served as the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources between 1993 and 1995 that the imposing NNPC Towers in Abuja were built and the construction of the NLNG was relaunched with considerable support from the government that eventually led to its completion after a 35-year stagnation. His service to the nation then coincided with a period when selflessness was seen as a norm.

He also played a huge role in the establishment of the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) which helped to deepen infrastructural development in the country.

As minister, Etiebet also introduced many reforms in the oil industry, including strengthening the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), an important regulatory agency. There are so many other achievements of Etiebet that helped to strengthen the Nigerian petroleum sector.

Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, founder of Ekulo Group of Companies, makers of popular brands like Eva Soap, Meditol Medicated Soap, Hawaii Soap, and Beva Lotion, among others, is also one of the recipients of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards of Independent Newspapers on account of his achievements in the lives of Nigerians.

Apart from his products which are now part of every household in Nigeria, Chief Okonkwo has also used his resources to better the society. He has used his company to create thousands of employment opportunities.

Also, through his Foundation, Bishop Emma Okonkwo Foundation, he has, without fanfare, touched lives in several ways.

Among others, the Foundation has, over the years, conducted medical outreach in various towns in Anambra State, provided fully equipped ambulances to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Awka, and Charles Boromeo Hospital, Onitsha, among other public and private health institutions nationwide.

In the same vein, the Foundation has also sponsored scholarship programmes for indigent students as well as donation of books and education materials to schools.

Okonkwo single-handedly built a popular and reputable Carol Convent Secondary School, Ichi, fully equipped and furnished before handing it over to the Anglican Church to manage. He equally runs a programme that takes care of the aged and widows in his hometown, Ichi, and has done a lot to empower the youth.

Foremost banker and entrepreneur, Atedo Peterside, is also selected for the honour following his contributions to humanity in the country.

He founded the IBTC Bank and through this, provided a platform for so many Nigerians and even non-Nigerians to earn a living.

Apart from job creation which he achieved successfully with his bank and other business concerns, Peterside has been an advocate of good governance through his Foundation, ANAP Foundation — a non-governmental organisation dedicated to championing good governance.

Through ANAP Foundation, in its few years of existence, he helped a lot to deepen democracy vis-a-vis good governance in the country. As the president of ANAP Foundation, Atedo Peterside advocated better governing structure for the populace, particularly the youths whom he noted were affected negatively by inclement policies of the government. For Atedo Peterside, it is no longer about him but future generations.

Key achievements of ANAP Foundation include establishing the COVID-19 Think Tank in 2020, launching the “GoNigeria” youth voter education initiative, and launching campaigns aimed at reducing public sector corruption.

Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu will also be honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of his impact on Nigerians through his company and foundation.

He founded Premier Lotto Limited (Baba Ijebu) in 2001, which is today Nigeria’s leading gaming company with thousands of agents, retailers and staff across the country.

Through Premier Lotto Limited, Chief Kessington has provided means of livelihood to hundreds of thousands of Nigerians and generated billions of naira in taxes and levies that have supported government revenues.

He deepened his philanthropy by setting up the Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation (KAAF), established in 2005, which has impacted education, healthcare and youth empowerment positively.

His donations to schools, universities, hospitals and communities run into billions of naira. From the construction of classroom blocks and libraries to the provision of medical equipment and diagnostic facilities, he has demonstrated that philanthropy can be both practical and transformative.

Meanwhile, previous recipients of the Independent Newspapers Lifetime Achievement Awards, including Bisi Akande (2024); Mike Adenuga Jnr (2024), and Ernest Ndukwe were considered for their imprints in the sands of time.

For instance, Ndukwe in recognition of his effort towards leading the telecommunications revolution in Nigeria, just like Mike Adenuga, was bestowed with the award because of his business and economic contributions to the development of the country, even as Chief Akande’s enviable political journey was also considered in his choice.

Speaking on the choice of the awardees, Chekwas Okorie, the founder of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), said the names are those who have made immense contributions to the development of the country, hailing the recipients and Independent Newspapers.

“The names mentioned are prominent Nigerians who have made contributions to the society in various ways, and they are policymakers in their fields,” he told our correspondent.

“They are not names strange to me as a person. They are names that I can attest to their prominence in the society and their positive contributions.

“So, I would say they are deserving persons because sometimes this issue of award, lifetime achievement award, or even chieftaincy that has happened mostly in Igbo land are given to people I’m not so sure are deserving of those kinds of awards, and making them look like something commercial.

“But from the names you mentioned, they are deserving of the honours and I congratulate them and your company for this,” he said.
