Barcelona thrash Newcastle to reach Champions League quarter-finals

Barcelona produced a stunning attacking display to thrash Newcastle United 7–2 on Wednesday, sealing an emphatic 8–3 aggregate win to book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha both scored twice, while Lamine Yamal, Marc Bernal and Fermín López also found the net as Hansi Flick’s side ran riot at Camp Nou.

The five-time European champions, chasing their first title in 11 years, showcased the attacking firepower that could drive a deep run in this season’s competition. For Newcastle, it was a painful exit as they missed out on a historic first quarter-final appearance.

According to Softfootball, Barcelona led 3–2 at half-time after a breathless opening period but took full control after the break, with López’s early second-half strike sparking a goal rush that overwhelmed Eddie Howe’s side.
Raphinha credited the home support for the dominant performance. “With the fans supporting us like that for 90 minutes, it’s hard to beat us at home,” he said.

The hosts had drawn 1–1 in the first leg but looked transformed in front of their fans, taking an early lead through Raphinha after a brilliant move initiated by teenage star Yamal.

Newcastle responded twice through Anthony Elanga, capitalising on defensive lapses, but Barcelona’s attacking quality proved decisive. Bernal restored the lead before Yamal converted a penalty just before half-time after a VAR review for a foul by Kieran Trippier.

Despite a resilient first-half showing from Newcastle, including key interventions from Dan Burn and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, Barcelona’s relentless second-half surge put the tie beyond doubt.
