The Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City, Edo State, has dismissed reports circulating in sections of the media and on social media platforms alleging that children died at the facility as a result of receiving the Measles–Rubella (MR) vaccine, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement by Osaretin Iyen, Head, Public Relations and Information Unit, the hospital said some children who had received the vaccine at locations outside the facility were later brought to its Children Emergency Ward with symptoms of febrile illness. According to the Management, the affected children were promptly treated, stabilised, and discharged in good health.
UBTH, however, confirmed the death of an eight-year-old male child with sickle cell disease who had been admitted for treatment in the same emergency ward. The hospital stressed that there was no evidence linking the child’s death to the Measles–Rubella vaccine.
“While vaccines, like other medical interventions, may have side effects, there is no evidence to suggest that the Measles–Rubella vaccine caused or contributed to the death in question,” the statement said.
The hospital urged the public and media organisations to rely on verified information from credible health institutions and to avoid spreading unsubstantiated reports capable of causing panic or undermining public confidence in immunisation programmes.
The Management also reassured the public that vaccines, including the Measles–Rubella vaccine, are safe, effective, and approved by both national and international health authorities.
UBTH extended its sympathy to the bereaved family and reiterated its commitment to patient safety, public health, and transparent communication. It also affirmed its dedication to the health and well-being of all patients.
