Shade Adeniyi, popularly known as Shade YDC, is an African fashion designer and founder of Yaomal YDC, steadily gaining attention for her research-driven approach to luxury fashion rooted in African heritage.
Speaking with our correspondent, Adeniyi—who is also a fashion illustrator and accessories designer—explained that her work is guided by cultural research, storytelling, and craftsmanship, emphasizing that fashion extends beyond clothing into identity and expression.
“Every collection starts with research. I study history, textures, and traditional techniques before translating them into modern designs,” she said.
Formally trained in fashion, the creative director noted that her early exposure to structured design education helped sharpen her eye for detail, construction, and form. This foundation, she explained, enables her to merge creative expression with technical precision.
In 2018, her dedication earned her the Fashion Week Winner of the Year award from Signature Secret Africa, a recognition she described as a defining moment in her career.
“That award affirmed that fashion can be both art and cultural documentation,” she said.
Through Yaomal YDC, Shade YDC reinterprets African heritage into bold yet refined silhouettes for the modern woman. Her work draws inspiration from African history, patterns, and traditional craftsmanship, reimagined in contemporary forms.
Her exploration of textiles spans indigenous and modern fabrics, including Ankara, Aṣọ-Òkè, and Adire, alongside denim, brocade, organdy, and mikado, allowing her to create pieces that balance cultural depth with global appeal.
Beyond garment construction, she remains actively involved in fashion illustration and accessory design, overseeing the creative process from concept to completion. According to her, this holistic approach ensures consistency, originality, and a strong brand identity across collections.
Intentional about exclusivity, the designer produces many of her pieces as one-of-a-kind designs or in limited quantities, a strategy she says preserves the luxury value of the brand while allowing clients to express individuality.
In 2025, Shade YDC was named a Top 5 Finalist in the Fashion’s Finest “Design for the Future” competition, further positioning her as a rising voice in African luxury fashion. Her work has also been featured on Channels Television and other leading Nigerian television platforms.
She has showcased her collections on platforms such as Fashion’s Finest Africa and Runway Heist by Bare Fashion Evening, using these stages to amplify African narratives through fashion.
“Runways are opportunities to tell our stories to a global audience,” she noted.
Proud of her African roots, Shade YDC said her long-term goal is to place African luxury fashion on international platforms without compromising authenticity.
“Growth is important, but staying true to our culture, craftsmanship, and quality is non-negotiable,” she added.
