Registered voters hit 1.68m ahead of Abuja LG poll – INEC 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published a revised Register of Voters for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The update lifts the total number of registered voters to 1,680,315. The register was presented in Abuja at a stakeholders meeting with political parties.

Aminu Idris, Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC FCT, described the exercise as a constitutional requirement ahead of the Area Council elections.

INEC said the voter figure reflected outcomes from the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR exercise that resumed on August 18, 2025. Online pre-registration was followed by physical registration nationwide from September 29, 2025.

The Commission suspended CVR in the FCT on October 12, 2025, to allow for revision of the register in line with the Electoral Act 2022.

The update process included biometric deduplication. It also covered public display for claims and objections.
A supplementary list was compiled from verified entries. The revised register now replaces all previous versions.

INEC data shows voter numbers in the FCT rose from 1,570,307 in 2023 to 1,680,315.

Detailed breakdowns were provided to political parties at the meeting. The Commission said preparations are advancing for the February 21, 2026, Area Council elections.

The polls will fill 62 councillorship seats and six chairmanship positions across the FCT.

INEC listed completed activities. These include monitoring party primaries, publication of final candidate lists, campaign monitoring, receipt of non-sensitive materials, activation of the BVAS system, voter education, stakeholder engagement and security coordination through ICCES.

The Commission also confirmed that Permanent Voter Cards for newly registered voters and those who applied for transfers or updates have arrived in the FCT, noting that a date for collection will be announced later.
