INEC Chair warns new REC against compromise as Tella is sworn in

Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday administered the oath of office to Adeniran Tella as a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and charged him to uphold the highest standards of integrity and transparency in the discharge of his duties.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters, Amupitan described the event as “a solemn call to duty,” stressing that the role of a REC remains central to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

The INEC Chairman said his own tenure began with a clear mandate to deliver free, fair, credible and inclusive elections, noting that the responsibility was both a legal and moral obligation owed to all Nigerians.

He warned that the credibility of the nation’s electoral system was “non-negotiable,” and cautioned the new REC against any action that could undermine public trust. “Any compromise on our values or our procedures shall not be tolerated,” Amupitan said.

He urged Tella to strictly adhere to all guidelines of the Commission and the provisions of the Electoral Act, adding that INEC was determined to combat all forms of election malpractice, including vote-buying.

According to him, the Commission expects every REC to instill confidence in voters and ensure that the choices of citizens are respected.

“The eyes of the nation are upon us. The public trust placed in INEC is sacred,” he said.

Amupitan also emphasised the need for collaboration with INEC staff to strengthen voter confidence, reduce apathy and entrench credible elections across the states.

The Chairman announced that Tella would resume duties in Oyo State, where he previously served, urging him to continue to give his best.

“Congratulations, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Amupitan concluded.
