AC Milan President Paolo Scaroni is confident that a crucial vote on the sale of the San Siro stadium to Milan and Inter will be approved by the local council tomorrow, calling its failure a defeat for Italian football.

The iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, better known as San Siro, hosted another sell-out crowd on Sunday night for Milan’s clash with Napoli.

But Scaroni stressed that the following day’s city council vote on whether to sell the land surrounding the stadium could prove even more decisive.

Approval would allow the two Milan clubs to construct a new modern venue on the site before demolishing the historic ground.

“Tomorrow will be, I hope, the end of a long journey that I started many years ago,” Scaroni told DAZN Italia. “I believe the local authorities will make a wise decision for the two clubs and for all of Italian football. It is a fundamental stage, and I hope it will happen tomorrow.”

The vote is expected to be extremely close after days of heated debate.

“As far as Milan are concerned, it is very simple. Milan are owned by RedBird, who in turn are owned by Gerry Cardinale, who we all know. I don’t understand this claim of a lack of transparency. Inter will answer for themselves, but their situation is not dissimilar to ours.”

The Milan president warned that a rejection would represent a serious setback.

“If problems were to arise, it would be a defeat for everyone: the clubs, the city of Milan, Italy, and Italian football. I don’t see anyone ready to take responsibility for creating so much damage to so many.”
