Barcelona midfielder Gavi will undergo knee surgery on Tuesday after the club confirmed that his meniscus problem requires an arthroscopic operation.

The 21-year-old has not featured since late August and had initially been placed on a conservative treatment plan.

However, after undergoing “intense sports stress tests” on Sunday, Barcelona’s medical team decided surgery was necessary to secure a full recovery.

The injury affects the same knee where Gavi suffered a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in 2023, which sidelined him for nearly a year.

“To guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action, Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination,” Barcelona said in a statement.

The club did not specify a timeline for his return, raising fears of another lengthy spell out.

Meanwhile, midfielder Fermín López also joined Barcelona’s injury list after sustaining a hip muscle problem during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Getafe.

He is expected to be sidelined for around three weeks.

With Gavi, López, Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Marc-André ter Stegen all unavailable, Barcelona’s injury crisis deepens at a crucial point in the season.
