Taraba government condemns biased security operations

Taraba state government has condemned what it described as a bias in the current resolution of the crisis between Kona and Fulani herdsmen by security agencies in Jalingo.

The government has also regretted the alleged lopsided arrests of youths in the affected areas of the recent crisis that engulfed the Kona people of Jalingo and Ardo Kola Local governments.

The government is particularly worried over lack of arrest and prosecution of the herdsmen by the security agencies despite their repeated and unabated operations with sophisticated weapons such as AK47 rifles.

A statement signed by the deputy press secretary to the Taraba state Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku, IIiya Bekyu Ankweh, condemned the renewed attacks on innocent citizens by herdsmen in some villages around Jalingo, the state capital.

The statement, which assured the people of the state of its commitment towards ensuring lasting peace for sustainable growth and development, however directed traditional rulers in the state to always preach peace in their domains and report suspicious persons in their midst to the government or security agencies for necessary action.

“The security agencies are being urged to be proactive by dealing decisively with armed bandits who are bent on making live unbearable for the people across the state,” the statement said.

It said the government has warned the youths in the state especially those domiciled around crisis-prone areas not to take the laws into their hands “but should strive in operating strictly within the confines of the law”.
