Executive vice chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Umar Garba Dambatta, has lamented rising cases of cybercrime and e-fraud in Nigeria using telecoms platforms, posing serious challenge to the Commission.
Speaking during NCC Special Day at the ongoing 30th Enugu International Trade Fair, Dambatta said, “The relevance of ICT to society cannot be overemphasised, because it plays a key role to development of the economy.”
However, he warned that cybercrime consisted of illegal activity conducted on a computer or mobile device connected to the internet.
“The Commission advises all our consumers not to open email that is Unfamiliar and also note that banks will request personal information over the Internet. In the event that this unfortunate circumstance should take place call your bank immediately to freeze the affected accounts. Secondly report to your service provider for further actions to be taken in retrieving your number,” he said.
Dambatta, represented by a deputy director in NCC, Ugama Ogbonnaya, assured that the commission would continue to recognise the importance of the consumers to the growth of the communication sector.
Earlier, Emeka Udeze, president of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), said the communication industry had witnessed a great revolution in the socio-economic life of Nigerians.
However, there are much work still to be done, to fully tap the potentials in the sector, Udeze said.
