Leader Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN),Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat, have returned to Nigeria from India and have allegedly been taken into custody by the Department of State Service (DSS) on Friday in Abuja.
The Ethiopian airplane carrying the couple arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Friday by exactly 12:01pm.
The couple returned to Nigeria from India after their medical treatment was stalled on controversial grounds. The couple had travelled on the order of the Kaduna State High Court.
DSS operatives were said to have taken El-Zak Zaky and his wife to an unknown destination.
News broke on Thursday that the Shiite leader was coming home. Ibrahim Musa, spokesman of the movement, had on Thursday broke the news of El-Zakzaky’s return.
The religious leader in an alleged video released on Thursday, said he was given the option of having his treatment at the hospital or return to Nigeria.
El-Zakzaky said that while weighing the options with his wife, some unidentified officials stormed his room and asked them to prepare to go home.
He had castigated President Muhammadu Buhari government for frustrating his treatment in India, adding that the federal government placed him under heavy security, noting that Kirikiri prison was better than the Indian hospital.
IMN spokesman Ibrahim Musa had said in a statement that “Following lack of a breakthrough in the impasse that ensued in the treatment in New Delhi of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, it is now confirmed that the Sheikh is on his way back to Abuja.
“In a video message sent through his office, the Sheikh said it was decided that they will be taken to the airport to be flown back to Nigeria. He has left Delhi by 17:00 Nigerian time. He prayed that may that be the best option in the circumstances.
“The Nigerian government’s interference and scuttling of the whole process rather than supervision as ordered by the court is the direct cause of the impasse. The government never wanted the medical leave in the first place, and did whatever to stop it by all means possible.”
The Shiite leader has had a protracted confrontation with the Federal Authorities and his IMN had been proscribed by the President Muhammadu Buhari government through a Court order.
