Manchester United stands to earn £3.4 million in add-ons due to Jadon Sancho‘s contributions in helping Borussia Dortmund reach the UEFA Champions League final.
Sancho played a pivotal role in Dortmund’s journey to the Champions League final, featuring in both legs against Paris Saint-Germain as they secured their spot with a 2-0 aggregate victory, marking their first final appearance since 2013.
The England international, who arrived at Old Trafford for £73 million in 2021, faced challenges making an impact under Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag before falling out with him at the start of the season. Following his refusal to apologize, Sancho was sidelined from the first team and subsequently loaned back to Dortmund during the January transfer window, with several financial terms attached.
Manchester United reportedly included additional payment clauses in Sancho’s loan agreement, tied to specific achievements. Dortmund initially paid £3 million upfront along with a portion of Sancho’s wages upon his return to Germany.
It’s reported that the agreement includes a clause stipulating that Dortmund must pay Manchester United an additional £3.4 million in bonus payments based on their progress in the Champions League and Sancho’s appearances in the competition.
With Dortmund securing their spot at Wembley Stadium on June 1, the majority of these add-on payments are believed to have been activated, showcasing Sancho’s significant impact.
While Dortmund is eager to make Sancho’s loan move permanent, his current £290,000-a-week salary could pose financial challenges for the club. Manchester United has yet to disclose their asking price for the player, whose contract at Old Trafford extends until the summer of 2026.
Despite a modest performance at Manchester United, where he scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 82 games, Sancho has shown improved form upon his return to Dortmund, contributing three goals and two assists in 18 appearances, with 16 of those being starts.
Dortmund’s journey to the final saw them defeat Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven in the last 16 before overcoming La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.
