The French Tennis Federation has increased the prize money pool for 2024 French Open with a record €53.5m set to be distributed to competitors at this year’s Roland Garros Grand Slam.
This represents a significant 7.82% growth compared to the 2023 edition, with this year’s winners also set to receive a generous increase in prize money.
Last year, Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek each received €2.3m as winners, but the 2024 French Open champions will see a 4.35% rise, taking home €2.4m
This marks the largest prize money in the tournament’s history, surpassing the €2.3m from last year and the figure from the final pre-COVID-19 tournament in 2019.
French Open prize money had experienced a significant drop from 2020 onwards across the sport due to the pandemic.
Comparatively, the prize money for the other three Grand Slam tournaments has also increased. Winners at the Australian Open earlier this year received $3,150,000, which converts to £1,662,366. Wimbledon champions in 2023 earned £2,350,000 each, while the winners of the 2023 US Open received £2,358,185 each.
There is an increase across the board, with first-round losers set to earn €73,000 compared to €69,000 from 2023, and first-round qualifying losers receiving €20,000.
Additionally, Roland Garros Tournament Director Amelie Mauresmo confirmed the completion of the new retractable roof at Suzanne-Lenglen and the installation of LED panels on the court.
This enhancement ensures that play can continue regardless of weather conditions, allowing the tournament to accommodate up to 25,000 spectators and host two matches simultaneously, providing greater scheduling flexibility.
Mauresmo also announced that there will be 11 night sessions at this year’s event, starting on May 26 and concluding on June 5, with matches commencing at 8:30pm local time.
