The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is set for a historic financial windfall following the approval of a record N1 billion prize money for league champions, beginning from the 2026/27 season.

The development, regarded as the highest financial reward in Nigerian domestic football history, was disclosed after a high-level meeting involving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Under the newly approved payment structure, the league champions will receive N1 billion, while the runners-up will earn N500 million. The team that finishes third will take home N300 million.

The reform marks the most lucrative prize distribution system ever introduced in the NPFL and is expected to significantly boost competitiveness and investment in the domestic league.

Stakeholders say the initiative represents a major milestone in the growth of Nigerian football, reflecting renewed efforts to improve the league’s commercial appeal and overall standard.

The unprecedented prize package is scheduled to take effect from the start of the 2026/27 NPFL season.
