Newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, has expressed determination to guide Nigeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria’s current qualifying campaign has faced challenges, with the Super Eagles sitting third in Group C with only two points, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa.
The situation highlights the urgent need for improved performances to secure a direct spot in the competition.
Despite a disappointing friendly defeat against Mali in March, Finidi remains confident in his abilities and the support of Nigerians to achieve the set targets.
The 53-year-old Rivers-born tactician emphasizes that the upcoming World Cup qualification matches against South Africa and Benin Republic are a collective responsibility for all Nigerians.
Acknowledging his responsibility as the coach, he pledges to give his best to secure victories in the crucial matches.
He assured that he has been closely monitoring Nigeria’s opponents and maintaining contact with Super Eagles players to prepare effectively.
“The World Cup qualification matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic is a collective responsibility for all Nigerians,” Finidi said, as quoted by Complete Sports.
“I know I am in charge now, and the heavy responsibility is on me to win the two world cup matches.
“I will do my best to ensure success and qualify for the World Cup. I am also in touch with the players, and they are ready and willing to give their all, having missed out on the last edition held in Qatar.”
Finidi stresses the importance of prayers and support from everyone, expressing belief in the team’s capability to succeed and qualify for the World Cup.
He dismisses judgments based on past friendly games and emphasizes his focus on winning the upcoming qualifiers.
“In terms of having knowledge of our opponents, I have been following them.
“The world today is a global village; one can monitor anything in the comfort of their sitting room.
“We need prayers and support from everybody; this is our own; we can do it and do it well.
“I watch our players weekly as they play in their various clubs. Honestly, my target is to win the two matches and not to be judged with the two international friendly games played.”
With just over five weeks until the crucial matches against South Africa and Benin Republic, Finidi is determined to lead the Super Eagles to triumph.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also reaffirms their confidence in Finidi’s leadership and commitment to achieving success in the qualifying campaign.
