AFCON: Ivory Coast sack Jean-Louis Gasset over poor results

Ivory Coast, the host nation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), have sacked coach Jean-Louis Gasset after the Elephants suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat on Equatorial Guinea on Monday, the country’s football federation (FIF) announced on Wednesday.

Ivory Coast have three points from three group games and are hoping to advance as one of the best four third-placed teams.

It was the heaviest home defeat in Ivory Coast’s history but they still have a chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 in the tournament.

Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, on an interim basis.

“The contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results,” the FIF said in a statement.

Ivory Coast finished the pool stage on three points in Group A having also lost 1-0 to Nigeria following a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau in their opening match.

The hosts must now wait on the results of the last group games on Wednesday to know their hope of progressing to the knockout stage.

Gasset, former Bordeaux coach, was appointed head coach of Ivory Coast in May 2022.
